该剧改编自金庸先生的同名武侠小说。全剧采用中篇形式将长篇剧分期出集，分为两部分：上部是《天龙八部之六脉神剑》，下部是《天龙八部之虚竹传奇》。讲述了虚竹和尚、段正淳之子段誉和乔峰这三个年纪相若，意气相投的结拜兄弟，与慕容博、慕容复父子的颠覆阴谋，交织出意想不到的人生际遇和明争暗斗的故事。
